Dr. Mahr Elder, DDS, MD,
Dr. Mahr Elder is a board-certified oral maxillofacial surgeon with over a decade of clinical experience. He leads the Elder Group, with locations in Novato, San Jose, Fairfield, Sloral, Vallejo, Stockton, and Pinole, California. He treats a comprehensive range of issues including temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, dental and facial trauma including sports injuries, alignment and overcrowding issues, and wisdom teeth complications.
Dr. Elder has completed extensive training in dentistry as well as oral and maxillofacial surgery. He earned his undergraduate degree as well as his doctor of dental surgery (DDS) at the University of the Pacfic, in San Francisco.
Dr. Elder went on to complete his medical degree at Wayne State University, in Detroit. He served his residency in oral and maxillofacial at the University of Detroit – Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Elder is a fellow of the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a member of the Marin County Dental Society.
Dr. Elder provide compassionate care to his patients, helping them to feel comfortable while under his care. He has high ratings across several review sites and his patients leave glowing recommendations. Dr. Elder has also won several awards for his outstanding service and surgical expertise.

LEADING THE ORAL SURGERY FIELD
Dr. Elder writes about oral and maxillofacial surgery in prestigious professional journals. He has contributed articles to the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and wrote the sections on pheocromocytoma and osteomalacia of the 5-Minute Dental Reference. Dr. Elder also presents at conferences and training events across the nation. For example, he gave a presentation on oral surgery complications to the Detroit Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Academy and a presentation on vascular complications in maxillofacial surgery to the Chalmers J. Lyons Academy.
MORE THAN A SURGEON
Outside of work, Dr. Elder is an avid sports fan. He follows the Golden State Warriors and the San Francisco 49ers. Dr. Elder also leads an active lifestyle by running and swimming regularly.
Dr. Elder is also actively involved in volunteering and humanitarian initiatives. His interest in voluntary service emerged while he earned his DDS. While training as a dental surgeon, Dr. Elder participated in Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE), a voluntary organization at the University of the Pacific that provides dental screenings and prevention education for underserved San Francisco area residents.
Dr. Elder has also volunteered for surgical mission trips to Ethiopia and Cuernavaca, Mexico. In Ethiopia, Dr. Mahr Elder worked for three weeks with the nonprofit Ethiopian North American Health Professionals and carried out 25 surgical procedures.
As the solo practitioner at Novato Oral Surgery, Dr. Mahr Elder diagnoses and treats a range of craniofacial and orthognathic disorders for patients in the Novato, California, area. Over the course of his academic and clinical career, he has received a number of medical honors, including a student leadership award from the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and a fellowship with the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Mahr Elder maintains active affiliations with Novato Community Hospital and Kaiser Hospital.
Before assuming his current position at Novato Oral Surgery in 2005, Dr. Mahr Elder delivered a presentation on oral surgery complications to the Detroit Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Academy and a presentation on vascular complications in maxillofacial surgery to the Chalmers J.
